XRLP Acoustics

Wall, floor and ceiling build-ups specified to meet the sound insulation standard your building control body applies — so the design is agreed before you build it.

A design-stage report, produced from your drawings and construction details. No site visit is needed for this work.

Design stage, not testing. This report specifies what to build. Pre-completion sound insulation testing has to be carried out on site by an accredited testing body. We tell you exactly what testing your scheme needs and when, but we do not carry it out.

Who this report is for

  • Converting a house into flats or an HMO
  • Building new flats, terraced or semi-detached houses
  • Commercial-to-residential conversions
  • Building control officers asking for a design-stage acoustic specification
  • Fixing a scheme that has already failed a pre-completion test

What the report contains

  1. Summary and the compliance route chosen
  2. Schedule of every separating wall, floor and partition, each referenced
  3. Specified build-ups layer by layer, with the acoustic performance each must achieve — product-agnostic, with named example products
  4. Target performance stated in the metric your regulator uses (DnT,w + Ctr, L’nT,w, STC, IIC or R’w as applicable)
  5. Flanking transmission review — the reason most schemes fail — covering junctions, floor continuity, service penetrations, sockets and ceiling voids
  6. Sketch details for the critical junctions
  7. Internal partition requirements
  8. Site workmanship checklist covering the sequencing and sealing errors that cause test failures
  9. Testing strategy: how many tests, which elements, at what stage
  10. A letter suitable for issue to building control

Standards we write to

Tell us which country the project is in and which authority the report must satisfy, and we assess against the right framework.

Region Assessed against
United Kingdom Approved Document E, Robust Details comparison
EU / international ISO 717-1 and 717-2, ISO 12354 prediction
United States & Canada ASTM E90 / E413 (STC), ASTM E492 (IIC), IBC 1206
Australia & New Zealand NCC Part F, AS/NZS 1276

What we need from you

  • Existing and proposed floor plans and sections
  • Existing construction details: joist type and direction, wall construction, ceiling type, floor finish
  • Photographs of the existing structure where the build-up is uncertain
  • Whether the scheme is new build, a material change of use, or a conversion
  • Your building control body and any comments already received

Your turnaround starts when we have all of this — not when you pay.

What this report is not

  • Not pre-completion sound insulation testing, and not a substitute for it. Testing must be carried out on site by an accredited testing body, and we will tell you what your scheme needs
  • Not a Robust Details registration, which is arranged directly with Robust Details Ltd
  • Not a structural assessment — always confirm load-bearing implications with a structural engineer
  • Not a guarantee of a pass if the design is not built exactly as specified

Price and turnaround

Tier Turnaround Price
Up to 4 separating elements 5 working days $595
5–15 separating elements 6 working days $1,095
16+ elements or a full new-build scheme 8 working days $1,795

Prices in US dollars, shown in full — that is the total you pay. Two rounds of revisions included within 30 days.

How it works

  1. Choose your report. The price you see is the price you pay.
  2. Tell us about the project. A short brief here, a fuller intake after checkout.
  3. We do the work. Modelling, calculation and drafting, accelerated by our own tooling.
  4. An acoustician reviews and signs it. Every report is manually reviewed and signed by a professional acoustician before it reaches you.

How it works in detail

Questions

Will this get me through building control?

It gives building control the design-stage evidence they ask for. Approval also depends on the design being built as specified and, in most jurisdictions, on passing the required on-site tests.

My scheme already failed a test. Can you help?

Yes. Choose the largest tier and tell us in the brief. We review the as-built construction against the test results and specify a remedial build-up.

Do you specify particular products?

We specify performance, then name example products at several price points. We take no supplier commission, so the specification stays independent.

What is flanking transmission?

Sound travelling around a separating element rather than through it — via a continuous floor screed, a shared ceiling void, or an external wall junction. It is the most common cause of failed tests, so it gets its own section in every report.

Optional. PDF, JPG, PNG, DWG or ZIP, up to 25 MB each. You can also send these after payment.

Add-ons

Desk-based assessment. We do not carry out site measurements. Where your authority requires measured background sound levels, you supply the survey data — or we tell you before we start.

Next step is checkout. The full technical questionnaire follows after payment.
