How much does an acoustic report cost?

By September 06, 2026

Almost nobody in acoustic consultancy publishes a price. Here is what the work actually costs, why the range is so wide, and what makes one quote three times another.

The short answer

A straightforward desk-based acoustic report costs somewhere between $450 and $3,000. Our own published prices run from $445 for a single domestic heat pump assessment to $2,995 for a large residential scheme. Traditional consultancies quoting hourly typically land in the same band for the same deliverable, but you will not know which end until the fee proposal arrives.

What actually drives the price

Whether a site survey is needed

This is the single biggest factor. A measured noise survey means someone with calibrated equipment on site, usually overnight, plus travel and reporting time. It can double the cost of a report. Design-stage work — sound insulation build-ups, room acoustics treatment, glazing specification — needs no survey at all.

The size of the thing being assessed

Nine dwellings and ninety dwellings are not the same job. More facades, more receptor positions, more calculations. The same applies to rooms in a room acoustics report and separating elements in a sound insulation report.

How much interpretation is required

A single air source heat pump against a clear permitted-development criterion is close to a calculation. A late-licence venue next to flats, where the outcome turns on judgement and the report has to persuade a committee, is not.

Why the industry does not publish prices

Partly because every project genuinely is different. Partly because hourly billing transfers all the uncertainty to the client. And partly because opacity is comfortable for the seller.

Standardising the scope solves most of this. If the deliverable is defined in advance — what is in it, what is not, what data you must supply — it can be priced in advance. That is the whole basis of how we work.

What to check before accepting any quote

  • Does it include a site survey? If the price looks low, this is usually why.
  • Which standard will it be assessed against? It should name the standard your authority uses.
  • Who signs it? Authorities check. The report should carry a named, qualified reviewer.
  • What happens if the authority queries it? Revisions should be included, not extra.
  • Is the turnaround from payment, or from receipt of your information? These are very different promises.
